Yesterday it was reported that Seth Curry signed a 2 year, $2 Million deal with the Sacramento Kings. This came as a disappointment to many Pelicans fans who were hoping to see the younger brother of the league MVP light up the scoreboard in the Crescent City. Luckily for Pels fans this will become a blessing in disguise. So go ahead and read this while you all dry your tears away and return your custom made Seth Curry jerseys.
Seth Curry averaged 24.3 points per game at this year's NBA summer league, or as it should be called the NBA recreational league. Curry put up eye-popping numbers up against players who for the majority will be teaching Elementary P.E. In less than two years. Anybody remember the 2014 Summer League star for the Pels? It was Austin Rivers. Rivers went off for 24 points in his first game and 16 in his second before finally settling down to earth. It was procaimed that Rivers was finally going to live up to his draft hype and show shades of his former Duke self. Instead, Rivers flamed out in the Crescent City and was traded to the Clippers during the middle of last season.
Glen Rice Jr, Josh Selby, Reggie Williams. These names sound familiar to anyone? I didn't think so. These are three names that over the last five years have either been named Summer League MVP or Summer League leading scorer. Rice Jr. Is currently in the Wizards' D-League system, Selby is playing ball overseas, and Williams spent last year in the D-League. Summer League stars are very bright until the real lights come on, the NBA regular season. Where these Summer League "stars" quickly burn out.
Seth Curry is not a rookie, since being signed by the Golden State Warriors three seasons ago after going undrafted out of Duke, Curry has played a staggering four career games and has averaged 0.8 PPG to go along with a .167 FG percentage. Curry has been sent to the D-League numerous times whilst being cut by five different NBA teams. Curry is a player who obviously has flaws that are so significant that no NBA team wants to sign him for more than 10 days. So why would the Pelicans want him if no one else does? So he can clog up an already congested backcourt? I'll pass.
At the end of the day Seth Curry is a scrub who lights up a developmental league, and who wowed every NBA fan for a week in Las Vegas. Let Sacramento have him, he'll work out very nicely with the other head scratching roster moves the team has made over the last few years. Believe me Pelicans fans, we dodged a bullet with this one.
